Major interaction_Pre
Users purchase a ticket and check into the comic con app via mobile and log in with their crunchyroll IDs.
Users are directed to the digital wall through the app, and stand on a designated platform.
3 m
User’s anime data is then projected onto the digital wall once the user scans the QR code through a mobile app, which generates an anime character based on the user's interests collected through the user's crunchyroll ID.
The user is also assigned to a team via the profile card that contains similar styles as other users that share similar interests or preferences.
Major interaction_During
User interacts with the digital wall via gestures/touchscreen, selecting the different categories and menus to display data generated through the user’s viewing patterns logged from an anime streaming app.
The pie chart is used to provide users a better understanding of the statistics of their most preferred studio.
Users can tap a part of the chart to get the location info of the selected studio's booth.
Design of the bar chart is inspired by the pirate's sword according to the theme of most favorite anime from the user.
The user can tap one of the charts to receive recommendations for the selected genre.
User taps on the profile card which displays a map of where the teams are located, viewable on the user's mobile phone.
Major interaction_Post
The user is able to continue their experience through the mobile phone, which allows users to find team members located on the map.
User’s mobile phone will vibrate when close to their group, which allows users to then use AR to see other users’ avatars and stats.
Design decision
Due to Comic-con tends to be overcrowded and the waiting lines tend to be very long, the digital wall provides a way for attendees to display their interests for others to see while waiting in line and also placed in designated areas throughout the convention.
The design team initially thought about using AR exclusively through the mobile app, but soon realized because there are so many people constantly moving about, the AR approach seemed unpractical.
Layout inspiration
Design elements inspired by trading card games.
Cards design
Inspired by trading card games such as Magic, Pokemon, D&D cards.
Since Comic-Con includes a range of elements from Comic books, Anime, Manga, Collectible card games, & Video games, we wanted to combine these elements to create a fun and engaging experience to promote socializing with kindred spirits.
Avatar AR design
Cosplaying is a unique and essential element at Comic-Con to display one’s interests, however, the majority of attendees do not cosplay. We wanted to design a way for everyone to be able to externally display their interests.
Initial card design
Classfication v.s. Categorization
Gesture control + Initial digital layouts
Changed to allow UI to remain at eye level, also allowing users to further interact with the charts/graphs.
Initial encoding channels
-
Line width on the map to find groups
-
Abstract shapes to define viewing pattern data
-
Sliders on mobile to interact with digital wall
Conclusion
By providing a fun & engaging way to find & interact with kindred spirits using elements of various Comic-Con genres, attendees are empowered to easily find and make friends, especially those who attend independently that might otherwise be nervous to go alone.
